Why Northstar
educational support
From Intentions to Action
Knowing what you want to accomplish and actually doing it are often two very different things.
Many learners have goals, good ideas, and a genuine desire to succeed, but putting those intentions into action can be difficult. Northstar provides practical, individualized support to help bridge that gap.
What Makes Northstar Different
Decades of educational experience have reinforced a simple truth: no two learners think, learn, organize, or solve problems in exactly the same way. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, I work collaboratively with each learner to find approaches that fit their strengths, needs, circumstances, and goals.
-
Strengths-Based: We begin with what's already working and build from there.
-
Practical: We work on real assignments, responsibilities, decisions, and challenges.
-
Individualized: Strategies are adapted to the learner rather than expecting the learner to adapt to a predetermined system.
-
Collaborative: Learners develop greater understanding of what works for them and how to communicate what they need.
A Flexible Approach
Support should be as individual as the learner. If an immediate challenge can be addressed in one or two focused sessions, that's a success. If ongoing support is useful as new challenges arise, I'm here for as long as it continues to be helpful.
Looking Beyond Today's Challenge
One of my favorite moments is when a client "graduates" because they no longer need my support. It means they have developed skills, strategies, and greater self-understanding that they can carry into new situations and challenges.
The goal isn't simply to get through today's assignment or obstacle. It's to help learners develop tools they can continue to use long after our work together ends.

Every Life Has Something Worth Preserving
A life history is more than a collection of dates and events. It is the experiences, memories, relationships, values, and perspectives that give those events meaning.
My background as a historian and oral history interviewer shapes the way I approach this work. Through thoughtful questions and careful listening, I help individuals and families reflect on what they want to preserve and communicate it in their own voice.
The process is personal and collaborative. There is no predetermined script and no "right" way to tell a life history. The goal is to create something that feels authentic to the person whose experiences are being preserved.
