FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Northstar Achievement Pathways?

Northstar Achievement Pathways is an individualized educational support practice founded by Dr. Lorie Zackin, serving students from elementary school through graduate school. Northstar also offers a separate service, Life Histories & Legacy Messages, for individuals and families who want to preserve meaningful experiences, memories, and family history.

Who do you work with?

Students of all ages, from elementary school through graduate school, as well as adults. Sessions are individualized to each person's strengths, goals, and challenges rather than following a fixed curriculum.

What is executive function support?

Executive function support focuses on the practical skills that help someone follow through on their goals: planning, organization, time management, prioritization, focus, task initiation, and follow-through. Sessions also cover research, writing, learning strategies, communication, and self-advocacy.

Do you provide therapy, counseling, or a diagnosis?

No. Northstar provides educational and executive-function support, not therapy, counseling, diagnosis, healthcare, crisis intervention, or legal advice. Sessions are focused on building practical skills and strategies.

Are sessions virtual or in-person?

Both are available. Virtual sessions are held over Zoom, and in-person sessions can also be scheduled. Contact Northstar to discuss what works best for your location and needs.

Do you work with clients outside Connecticut?

Yes. Virtual sessions are available to clients anywhere in the United States.

What are Dr. Zackin's qualifications?

Dr. Lorie Zackin holds a Ph.D. in Holocaust & Genocide Studies from Gratz College, an M.Ed. in Special Education and an M.Ed. in Secondary Education, both from the University of Hartford, and a B.A. in History, also from the University of Hartford. She holds a Connecticut teaching certification in History for grades 4-12, and her professional experience includes over 13 years as a secondary-level history instructor, 9+ years as a UConn Early College Experience instructor of U.S. History and Human Rights, and 24 years as adjunct faculty in World History, U.S. History, European History, and Western Civilization at the University of Hartford. She also works as an oral history interviewer.

As of now: Virtual Support (Adult) is $175, In-Person Support (Adult) is $200, Virtual Support (for Children & Teens) is $175, In-Person Support (for Children & Teens) is $250, and Life Histories & Legacy Messages is $250.

How do I book a session?

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Cancellations made 24 or more hours before a session receive a full refund, and a timely reschedule transfers your payment to the new session. Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are 50% refunded (or 50% credited toward a reschedule, with the balance due before the new session). No-shows are not refunded. If Northstar needs to cancel a session, clients can choose a full refund or full credit.
